What are UTM Parameters?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are simple code snippets that you can add to the end of a URL to track the performance of campaigns and content. They allow analytics tools like Google Analytics to tell you exactly where your traffic is coming from.

Why Use UTMs?

Without UTMs, traffic from emails, social media, and ads often gets lumped into "Direct" or "Referral" traffic. UTMs give you granular data to answer:

  • Which marketing campaign is driving the most sales?
  • Which email newsletter link got the most clicks?
  • Is Facebook or Twitter generating more ROI?

The 5 UTM Parameters

utm_source Example: google, newsletter, facebook

Identifies which site sent the traffic, and is a required parameter.

utm_medium Example: cpc, banner, email

Identifies what type of link was used, such as cost per click or email.

utm_campaign Example: summer_sale, promo_code

Identifies a specific product promotion or strategic campaign.

utm_term Example: running+shoes

Identifies search terms.

utm_content Example: logolink, textlink

Identifies what specifically was clicked to bring the user to the site, such as a banner ad or a text link.
